As ahot topic combining political sensitivity and economic importance, the study ofAmerican news media on RMB exchange rate in terms of Appraisal Theory isnecessary and important from both theoretical and practical aspects. So far the studiesof American media's attitude toward China are seldom analyzed in the light ofAppraisal Theory. Since Chinese government's international image portrayed byforeign press is not objective，the thesis further unearths China's image in Americannews media. 　　1.3 The Corpus语料库
　　A corpus is necessary to conduct quantitative research. Fourteen news texts(seven from Business Column and seven from Opinion Column) are selected fromNew York Times of the year 2010. All of the texts are chosen from the official website

　　This study aims to probe into the following questions:First and foremost, by overall analysis, what is the favored type of Attitudeapplied by authors? Affect, Judgment or Appreciation? Which type of value isdominating the whole resources, positive or negative?Secondly，what are the features of attitudinal resources of each sub-type ofAttitude by tentative analysis?Thirdly, what are the differences between Business column and Opinion Columnin attitudinal resources in terms of each sub-category of Attitude?

　　
　　1.5 Layouts结构
　　This thesis is mainly composed of five chapters. The first three ones are thetheoretical foundation on which the present research is based.Chapter one introduces the main contents and the significance of this study.Research questions and layout are presented as well.Chapter two is a general review of literature to guide the present study in a rightdirection. It is an introduction to the origin and development of the Appraisal Theoryhome and abroad.Chapter three displays the theoretical framework of the thesis，depending onMartin's three appraisal sub-categories: Attitude, Judgment and Graduation.Chapter four is the nuclear part of the thesis. The researcher applies Attitudesystem to the chosen texts to answer the research questions. Then, data of two sets ofnews are compared in order to observe the differences in the use of appraisalstrategies in Business Column and Opinion Column.According to the results of chapter four，the researcher draws conclusions of thewhole thesis in chapter five. In this part，research questions put before is responded.Besides, the limitations of the study and suggestions for further research are alsopointed out.
