Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of English Writing
It has been ten years since China joined the WTO. In this period, China gets not only new opportunities of development, but also challenges of fierce competition around the world. With China's entry into WTO, its international exchange and communication increased. English, an international language, adapted as official language by many countries, plays an important role in China’s ten years’ developing progress. People use English to converse on many significant conferences, political and economic, national and international. People get significant information from books, newspapers and materials, which are written in English. Due to the international communication and cooperation, government of China value English study of Chinese students very much. With the pace of China's international moving, students pay more attention to foreign language study, especially English. Students practice listening and speaking in order to communicate with foreigners fluently, because that more foreigners come to China, andopportunities to go abroad increase. They think highly of reading, for that they can read English articles without language barrier, since many great works of literature are written in English, and they can be understood better without translation. In contrast, English writing is considered the weakest part of English study for Chinese students. The reason is that there is no good ways for them to write English article properly. Improving the writing ability is one of the English teaching tasks in the activities of foreign language teaching in senior highschool. So finding out some ways to improve the current situation of English writing isextremely urgent.

1.2 Significance of the Present Study
English writing is important in many fields. But as for the students in senior high school, the most difficult thing they must face is college entrance examination. English writing playsan important role in the examination. It takes up a large proportion. In the Englishexamination paper of college entrance of 2011 (the national paper), the last examinationquestion, English writing, is worth 30 points, counts for one-fifth of the full mark. Above all,English grade is closely related with the part of English writing. It is known that every pointin the college entrance examination is vital to each student’s fate. So in some degree, Englishwriting decides one’s opportunity to enter his ideal university. But it is found in the process ofcollege entrance examination papers reading that many students can not write Englishcompetition well. This is also proved in a survey: 50% students in the survey regard Englishwriting is the most difficult part in the process of English learning (Xu Guifang 2006). Inaddition, international communication demands one’s ability of English writing.
