Abstract

With the development of the technology, now the world becomes much smaller than before, it is not so difficult for people to go out and even abroad, as across the pacific. As a result of that, the World Exposition came to being and soon became a well-known event, in the last hundreds years, there are more than 40 Expos held in different cities of various countries. (Li & Liu, 2005) It is a party for all the human beings all over the world, which is an opportunity for people to know the others better, for the organizations to cooperate, for the companies to do some business, for the countries to show themselves to the entire world, to gain a good national image, in a word, it is a big party. Is it an advantage or disadvantage to the city? There are a lot of questions on the topic.

The aim of the research is to critically evaluate the Expo as an opportunity for further urban tourism development. Three research objectives were set to help to achieve this aim. They are to explore the influence of the World Expo on the host city by reviewing the history of the Expo; to identify Shanghai’s current tourism position, and to analyze the huge influence of the Expo on Shanghai. Secondary research was used as the main methodology to gather relevant data and information on the subject, with the help of other relevant methods. It is considered that using secondary research is the most suitable research method for three main reasons. Firstly, due to events tourism literature is easily available; secondly, it is difficult and time consuming to collect primary data; thirdly, because literature about past Expos is available, it is easier to collect resources by secondary research than by primary research. The World Expo not only allows various technological produces and culture concepts to be exhibited, it also brings with it a rich material and culture heritage which have become the landmarks and important tourism resources of the city. The World Expo also helps in promoting the tourism image of the city and enhances the attractiveness of tourism in the city. The World Expo also provides business opportunities for the tourism industry, and drives the emergence of new tourism product routes. The Expo has improved the construction of infrastructure in Shanghai including transport, accommodation and tourism facilities. It has also attracted large numbers of tourists which has enlarged the tourist source markets of the city, providing a basis for further development of various kinds of urban tourism. The Expo has also brought expansion in the entertainment area in the construction of the Expo site and other entertainment facilities and their subsequent use after the Expo.
