With the globalization of the world economy,

Needless to say,people who can fullyappreciate different cultures are in greater need in the modem world. For the purpose ofmeeting the needs of growing international communication, university students aresupposed to be sensitive and tolerant of cultural differences as well as flexible withthem. In light of the tendency, the current College English Curriculum Requirements(Requirements hereafter) for non-English Majors ((Ministry of
Education,2007) clearlystates that teachers should attach importance to cultivating students' interculturalcommunicative competence (ICC).As is self evident, language teaching can't be separated from culture teaching, “If,however, language is seen as social practice,culture becomes the very core of languageteaching. Cultural awareness (CA) must then be viewed as enabling languageproficiency and as being the outcome of reflection on language proficiency." (Kramsch,1999; 8). With the development of economy and international interculturalcommunication,the latest conception of foreign language education has been tocultivate learners' CA and skills (intercultural competence). Especially today,as alingua franca of the whole world, English has taken the role of internationalcommunication tool and the international communication in English “involves bothnative-nonnative and nonnative-nonnative discourse participants” (Alptekin, 2002; 57).For university students preparing for the future world, it is ci^cial to develop theirEnglish listening and speaking ability to finally improve their communicativecompetence especially their ICC. As a receptive skill and an indispensible means forobtaining information, listening is an essential component of comprehendingcompetence and plays a key and inexplicit role in English learning. And “listeningcomprehension provides the right conditions for language acquisition and developmentof Other language skills" (Hasan, 2000: 138). In the process of communication,understanding what is said is the first important step. But sometimes students find ithard for them to comprehend the listening material as they have to not only battlevocabulary or syntactic patterns but also devote time to interpreting the meaning of itbecause it is written about an unfamiliar culture. After all,successful listeningcomprehension involves many factors.With the listening and speaking ability stressed in the Requirements (Ministry ofEducation,2007),great importance has been increasingly attached to college Englishteachings Since 2007,attrifeuted-to-the4mplementation-ot Requirements thecultivation of sense of CA has aroused the attention and interest of researchers andteachers. What should we do to integrate them organically? At such an age ofglobalization, the traditional way of listening teaching with emphasis on mere listeningskills is challenged beyond any doubt. Thus, there is a need to make some adjustmentsin terms of pedagogical strategies correspondingly.The students should not on】y be prepared for the existing society but given thereadiness and the tools to surpass it and maybe someday change it for the better.
