During my postgraduate studies here,with my majoring in intercultural communication and teaching under the guide of mysupervisor,the writer has thus begun to recognize the need to broaden the non-Englishmajors' horizon beyond the purely linguistic pedagogy by placing greater weight on thecultural information of the TL countries, and trying to raise some kind of CA throughCELC.However, the fact is that most college English teachers may not feel competentenough to deal with it in CELC. After all, culture is complex, deep and wide. Theseterms are seldom identified as a problem nor clearly defined in educational debates.Both the teachers themselves and the textbooks used tend to represent an old fashionedview of culture as something static that can be transmitted to the students throughteacher-centered education.
1.2 Research questions研究问题
The main objective of this paper is to find out the intercultural factors that affectnon-English majors' listening ability so as to probe into some ways of cultivating thestudents' CA as the basic step towards future ICC through CELC. On the grounds ofthis purpose three main research questions are designed:(1) What are the factors that affect the non-English majors' listening ability? Arethere any intercultural factors?(2) If so,in what aspects is listening ability affected by intercultural factors?(3) How can college English teachers enhance the non-English majors' CA inCELC under the Requirements!1.3 The structure of the
thesisThis thesis includes five chapters.Chapter one serves as an introduction to the whole thesis. It introduces thebackground of the study and provides the purpose and significance of the researchwork.Chapter two gives an analysis of the literature relevant to the topic. It first reviewssome general theories about culture and language teaching for the purpose of forming atheoretical base and foundation for proposing culture teaching in CELC. The studydraws upon a wide range of theoretical perspectives including the process of listeningcomprehension, CA and cultural transfer. It is hoped that the theoretical basis for theresearch questions and the whole thesis has been established.Chapter three outlines the research
methodology used in the study of the thesis,and raises the quantitative research method as the one of the thesis. Specific proceduressuch as pilot phase are introduced. Methodological issues which will arise during thecourse of the study are discussed, including participants, procedures, data collection andvalidity and reliability.Chapter four is the core of the thesis. It presents the data collected during thefieldwork. The data of the chapter are divided into three main categories; Preview of4Three Orientations, Intercultural Factors and Listening Comprehension, and Strategiesof Developing CA in CELC. These categories are closely linked with the researchquestions. Some interpretations and discussions are given to comply with the datapresentations so as to link them with the discussions in Chapter Two and Chapter Three.Chapter five,serving as the last chapter of the thesis, arrives at the final conclusion.It not only gives a final summary of the whole thesis, most importantly, it will raisesome implications and suggestions based on the analysis of both the literature and data.The suggestions include various f
