American dream is the dream or belief that American people cherish most. Traditional American dream is a guarantee about freedom, land, equality and opportunity, believing in initiative, courage and hard work are the keys to achieve success, but in a different historical periods, American dream have different characteristics. The movie "Forrest Gump" reflects the American people's living conditions and changes of mental outlook after World War II, such as most American’s negative decadence and blind passion. In the movie, it is embodies as Jenny’s decadence and escaping in the face of adversity and escape and Lieutenant Dan’s much enthusiasm in fighting. In the history which Forrest Gump describes, American dream has experienced a strong impact of age, it has been injected with a lot of non-rational elements.
In the movie, Gump seems to be a person who has no dream. He almost has all virtues - honesty, courage and loyalty that American people advocate. From the role of Gump, we see the persistence of life and the hope for life. In the film, supporting by this spirit, Gump, who was a person with a low IQ went to college, served with distinction in the war and had been awarded medals. Later, he took part in the remarkable "ping-pong diplomacy", and then became a tycoon in the shrimp industry, rescued the Bubba's life and healed Dan’s trauma, and eventually in running around the United States, he brought millions of American people courage and hope. The running throughout the film has been sublimated into a persistent mental strength and healthy attitude towards life, indicating that persistent efforts can bring people courage and hope. This is the important belief of the traditional American dream. Gump is not just an ordinary person, he represents and symbolizes the American dream that almost every American treasures it in their minds, only this fabulous dream is in line with the essence of the American dream.
