Chapter One Introduction
As one of the basic and intrinsic human emotions, horror is a kind of negative emotion. James Joyce describes it as, if a serious and persistent suffering occupies people’s thinking, and makes people bear in mind the cause of the suffering, it can be called horror” (Paul Wells, 2001). If, as Joyce says, horror is a feeling of suffering, people ought to avoid it consciously. However, it is interesting that horror has been treated as a tradition of entertainment since ancient times, and this tradition appeared as early as in Roman times. As a way of entertainment and collective revelry, the bloody and brutal scenes of gladiatorial combat was the embodiment of human’s bloodthirsty animal nature. As to how the two opposite emotions, horror and joy, convert to each other and gradually become arts from this conversion, this is an important topic that is well worth discussing in the studies of horror films. Just because of the possibility https://www.51lunwen.org/strategy/2008/0520/0800439517.html of the conversion of horror which is a negative emotion and joy which is a positive emotion, people actively go after horror rather than escape it.
Before films came into being, people recorded horror stories orally or in writing as the main form of entertainment, but this could only trigger an abstract feeling of horror. Even the visualized paintings could only display static horror. The birth of films unprecedented presented horror scenes realistically with its unique fantasy mechanism. “If movies are the dreams of the mass culture, ... horror movies are the nightmares” (Stephen King, 1987). Every age has its own nightmares. (Isabel Cristina Pinedo, 1997) Horror movie is closely related to its time. It can directly and relentless present a variety of social problems and moral anxiety in the process of social development and civilization in its unique way.
