EQ is a relatively new concept. It is the capacity for our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships. Emotional intelligence describes abilities distinct from but complementary to IQ. Many people who are book smart but lack emotional intelligence end up working for people who have lower IQ. Just like mathematics or reading, the world of emotions is an area that can be mastered more or less skillfully and requires mental alertness. Upon mapping we realize that EQ is a special capacity, which determines how well we are able to make use of the other skills that we possess, besides IQ.

Arguments for the concept

As adults in the working world, one of the greatest challenges is to manage the emotional lives with intelligence. The passions, when properly managed, can help people to act, prosper, and survive. Mismanaged, they can wreak havoc.

Most experts now agree that IQ scores largely reflect a relatively narrow range of linguistic and mathematical skills. IQ taps only a small part of the full human intellect. Further, the skills assessed by IQ tests may be relevant to classroom performance, but the scores do little to predict performance in the "real world."  Social scientists have long been aware that IQ tests are inadequate for predicting success in life. IQ scores account for as little as 25% in predicting future success in college. In the work environment, technical savvy and knowledge may contribute as little as four to ten percent towards performance effectiveness. Over ninety percent of effectiveness at work is attributed to one's emotional intelligence. EQ, a term coined to express the measure of one's emotional intelligence, has been proposed as the answer to why some people with average IQs end up more successful in life than some with brilliant IQ scores.

Consider one compelling demonstration of the need for an expanded view of "intelligence." At age 4, a large number of children were given both an IQ test and the "Marshmallow Test”.
