　　　In Canterbury Tales, there are altogether 30 travelers including the inn-keeper as host on the pilgrimage to Canterbury to pay homage to the religious martyr, Sir Thomas a Becket. Every one of the pilgrims decides to tell 4 stories on the way there and back, and that would bring the total up to 120. Because of his rich life experience, the noticeable characteristics of Chaucer’s narration are its loyalty to reality and its infinite sense of humanity. Among all these pilgrims, the wife of Bath is made out to look and sounded like one of the most outstanding figures. Some scholars think that Chaucer makes the woman quite distinct from other characters on purpose. Her portrait in the General Prologue is one of the most impressive, and it is good to add that this is Chaucer’s purely English work. Her attitude to social customs is worth pondering.
2.1 Unconventional Style of Dressing up

Clothes give information about the status and positions of the person who wear them. This saying applies to every society and to all ages. The Kings and Queens of the era had strong impacts on the fashion trend and clothing during the medieval ages. However, only the wealthy and celebrities could dress themselves in fashionable clothes. I’ve found some descriptions about medieval women’s clothing style from some essays: “Sumptuary Laws restricted people in their expenditure including money spent on clothes.” (Lee, Youngkyoung, 28) During the middle ages, women had to use some type of cosmetic to pain their face and sun-bleach their hair. Many young women were forced to pluck their hairline according to the medieval fashion in order to have a higher forehead. It was awful to see them in such pain. They had to follow the social fashion and dressing’s rules even though these conventional regulations were unacceptable.
However we can see that the Wife of Bath doesn’t care any of the medieval fashion trends. In the General Prologue, Chaucer uses some sentences to describe Alison’s dress and discusses how she is a talented weaver. “ Ywympled wel, and on hir heed an hat. As brood as is a bokeler or a targe. A foot-mantel aboute hir hipes large. And on hir feet a paire of spores sharpe.” (Chaucer, 32) From these sentences, we can find that Alison is possessed of great self-confidence. This woman thinks highly of herself and her clothing skills as a cloth maker. If you are asked to use one word to describe her clothing, you may use “elegant”. But I don’t think the word “elegant” is suitable. Her sumptuous cover chiefs and good-quality clothes are garish rather than elegant; her hat looks like a buckler. Her clothes are "fun scarlet reed" and her shoes are "moister and new". Some scholars think that the influence of the depiction is meant to publicize her and her wealth, rather than attempt unexpected grace. However I don’t agree with this kind of view. Alison boasts of her big hat and takes proud of her ten pounds of cloth.
