Cao Xueqin (1715?-63) was born into a family which for three generations held the office of Commissioner of Imperial Textiles in Nanjing, a family so wealthy that they were able to entertain the Emperor Kangxi four times and the Emperor Kangxi also favored the Caos very much. However, good things can not last long. In 1723 the Yongzheng Emperor who was unfriendly to the Caos, succeeded to the throne. In 1727 the Cao family, favored by the previous emperor, was accused of the crime of peculating public funds so that their estates were confiscated and they moved from the south to Peking to the western suburban part of the capital city. Cao Xueqin who had spent his childhood in great luxury, shared the family’s fate of a wretched existence. Sometimes he was so poor that he could not afford food. It was under these poverty-stricken circumstances that he started the creation of his great novel, A Dream of Red Mansions, in other words, it is the real reflection of his enormously changed family situation--from that of an affluent high official family to that of a disgraceful family--marked deep imprint on the author. A Dream of Red Mansions shows us his deep imprint from an artistic point.

A Dream of Red Mansions, one of the four greatest classical Chinese novels, has enjoyed wide popularity throughout the following two hundred years and more after its creation. The novel recounts the love story among Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai and their tragic life. The book is a description of the rise and fall of sediments represented by the four most prominent families. It reveals the complex contradictions of the feudal family, performance of the feudal marriage, morality, culture, education and creates a series of noble civilians and the tragic image of slave women who lived in feudal society. The novel also reflects the twists and turns that the feudal society is bound to collapse.
1.2 Brief Introduction of Charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre
Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855), English writer, is noted for her novel Jane Eyre (1847), and she is sister of Anne Bronte and Emily Bronte. The three sisters are almost as famous for their short, tragic lives as for their novels. In the past 40 years Charlotte Bronte’s reputation has risen rapidly, and feminist criticism has done much to show that she was speaking up for oppressed women of every age and she was one of them.
Charlotte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England, the daughter of an Anglican clergyman who moved with his family to Haworth amid the Yorkshire moors in 1820. After their mother and two eldest children died, Charlotte was left with her sisters Emily and Anne and brother Branwell to the care of their father, and their strict, religious aunt, Elisabeth Branwell.
