摘要: Autonomous learning is also beneficial to the teachers. This kind of learningmode will free teachers from the traditional routine work of knowledge-giving to thestudent-oriented teaching mode.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Bakground of the Study
With the rapid social development of China and its frequent contact with theinternational communities, qualified talents with specialized knowledge and a goodcommand of foreign languages are increasingly needed. Consequently, the learning ofEnglish as a foreign language (EFL) in China is becoming more and more popular andimportant. Therefore, how to teach and learn English well has become one of the majorissues among teachers and students. According to some surveys, however, there existsconsiderable gap in English learning and teaching between universities and high schools.For a long time the Chinese learners have been characterized as passive,dependent ones,especially those in senior high schools. As a result, after entering universities, freshmenin this transitional stage are not accustomed to the new study and have some difficultyin adapting to the requirements of college English teaching and learning. Then how todevelop and promote students' sense of responsibility on their own English learning hasbecome a big problem among teachers.College English Education, as part of Chinese higher education, is compulsory forall undergraduates in China who do not major in English. In order to meet therequirements of society and education, the Revised National Syllabus for CollegeEnglish issued by Chinese Education Ministry gives priority to fostering students'comprehensive ability to build up their confidence, develop their autonomous learningability and cooperation spirit so that they can use English as a tool to communicate.That is to say, the tendency of education should shift from” how to teach" to "how tolearn" (Shu & Zhuang, 1996:67). Therefore. It is urgent and of vital importance to fosterstudents ability of autonomous English learning in college.

1.2 Significance of the Study
A great deal of studies show that autonomous English learning is not a new topic,but it is still worth studying further. Such a study is of great importance and significancefor the following reasons: This research has a profound educational meaning, especially as the wholeChinese education system is undergoing a reform which attaches great importance todeveloping students' ability of autonomous learning. Learning is a life-long task of aperson and one need update the former knowledge with the time going on. At present,under the ideology of humanism and life-long education, it is an inevitable tendency todevelop students' autonomous learning. It is of great importance to individuals' growth. It is necessary and essential foreveryone to learn knowledge during their whole life,and autonomous learning can helpthem learn independently at any time. When learning transfers from teacher-centered tolearner-centered in the learning process,the students will play more important roles andbecome more self-independent and highly motivated than ever before. Therefore,autonomous learning is conducive to enhance the students' overall development in thelong term. Autonomous learning is also beneficial to the teachers. This kind of learningmode will free teachers from the traditional routine work of knowledge-giving to thestudent-oriented teaching mode. At the same time,teachers need to further theirunderstandings of the constructivism theory to undertake more roles like the counselor,information provider, facilitator and so on.
