2.2 An Overview of the Studies on Multimodal Metaphor
This part consists of studies on multimodal metaphor at home and abroad,theoretically and practically.The study of multimodal metaphor has proved to be a fruitful area in the westsince the theory of multimodal metaphor was first proposed. This theory is derivedfrom “pictorial metaphor”. The earlier representatives of “pictorial metaphor” studyinclude Kennedy, Whittock and Carroll, who all concentrated on visual metaphor ofmedia arts. Kennedy argued that “any vehicle of communication, including pictures,should be able to use metaphor, provided that its use is intended to occasion for ametaphoric thought”(1982:24). Then he began to elaborate his theoretical workthrough carrying out various experiments, and claimed that target domain and sourcedomain are irreversible. Whittock (1990) further developed the study of Kennedy,narrowing the range and taking ten subtypes of examples. He has got an achievementin the study of cinematographic metaphor. However, both Kennedy and Whittockcouldn’t go beyond the study of metaphor in a broad sense. Visual hybrid cannot betaken into account. Whittock holds the opposite viewpoint on being irreversiblebetween target and source and put forward “reversal”, a significant differencebetween visual metaphor and verbal ones. Although they regard pictorial metaphor asa rhetorical technique, these studies are still helpful to the subsequent pictorialmetaphor study.
