Chapter 1 Introduction

This research focuses on the pragmatic study of fuzzy language in social news in  China  Daily.  In  this  introductory  chapter  the  background  information  will  be provided, including the rationale, the purpose, the significance, the methodology and data collection as well as the organization of the study.  

1.1 Rationale of the Study 
For  a long time, people tend to regard precision  as the most important property in  language  usage  while  ignoring  fuzziness.  And  during  this  stage  researchers  have concentrated  on  the  precision  phenomenon  of  language.  However,  how  big  is  'very big'?  And  how  high  is  'very  high'?  It  seems  impossible  for  us  to  offer  a  standard answer to such seemingly simple questions concerning fuzziness. As a matter of fact, fuzzy  language  exists  in  every  part  of  our  daily  language  communication  as  well  as different types of writing to expect unexpected and ideal effects. In 1965, Professor L. A. Zadeh proposes fuzzy logic and 'fuzzy set' theory in the University of California. From  then  on,  people  come  to  realize  that  both  precision  and  fuzziness  are  the inherent  properties  of  language.  For  the  past  decades,  a  great  number  of  researchers and  scholars  hammer at  studying  the fuzzy  phenomenon  in  various  disciplines,  such as Fuzzy Mathematics, Fuzzy Logics, Fuzzy Psychology as well as Fuzzy Linguistics. Since  then,  a  large  amount  of  fruits  have  been  gotten  from  the  study  of  fuzzy linguistics.  The  earliest  study  on  fuzzy  linguistics  is  merely  confined  to  semantic  category. The subsequent studies, however, are concerned to many other fields, among which is the  pragmatic  study  of  fuzzy  language.  In  recent  years,  the  scholars'  analyses  on pragmatic  functions  of  fuzzy  language  have  inspired  language  researchers  and language  learners.  Consequently,  the  pragmatic  usage  and  functions  of  fuzzy language  are  studied  by  more  and  more  researchers  and  learners  in  more  types  of writings.

1.2 Purpose of the study
