1.1 Background of the study
Vocabulary teaching is the most basic and critical component in teaching process,just as D.A. The teaching target of College English is to cultivate the comprehensiveapplication in English，particularly in the ability of listening and speaking, in order tohelp them have the talent to communicate by English in their future learning, workingand social intercourse availably. Meanwhile, it means to improve their capacity inself-study and comprehensive cultural literacy，in order that they can adapt to therequirements on the social advancement and international communication in China.As China is vast in territory, each area and university has great difference，so collegeEnglish teaching should implement the tenet by using different instruction in variousclassification, teaching students should be in accordance of their personal talents foradapt the practical requirements of personal instruction.There are three layers in English teaching of College, namely, basic, intermediateand higher requirements, one of which is the non-English majors are demanded toaccomplish after language learning and practice at college. The basic one is the lowestlayer that all majors except English have to meet prior to graduating, and in thisrequirement, students have to attend the learning process in class, conversations withclassmates and teachers，including the speeches on daily topics in English. In Listening,Students have to get the native-speaker radio and video programs, with the oral rate ofapproximate 130 to 150 words every minute, catching the general meaning and essential1information; Apart from the requirements in Listening, in Speaking, students shouldcommunicate in the process of learning in English，and they can discuss on a certaintopic，talk to each other on daily topic in English, they can deliver a short speech on afamiliar topic after preparation in clear expression, without mistakes in tone and accent,and they are able to use basic conversation strategies in discussion as well; besides，inReading，students have to understand the English articles on daily topics basically，withthe rate of 70 words in each minute.
