However, these researches about English new words areconducted from the perspective of lexicology, which are merely a kind of summary orextracting of surface phenomena, therefore, we can not know the internal generatingmechanism and process. As we know, each school's theories and research approaches resolveone or some unsolved problems in the past from a new perspective，but there is no school cansolve all the problems of English new words study. The study of English new words is still onits way of development. In English in 2061; A Forecast American linguist Mario Pei has saidthat "what greatly differentiates English in the year of 2061 from that of today is theappearance of plenty of neologism."⑷ We can predict that the changes in Englishpronunciation and grammar will not be great，on the contrary English vocabulary develops fast.So what's the exact direction of neologism development? The development tendency ofmodem linguistics tends to do researches in terms of semantics; therefore English neologism'sdevelopment is no exception. For example, exploring the ways of old words acquiring newmeanings or the generating mechanism of polysemy，etc. Obviously, cognitive metaphortheories provide an interpretation of old words acquiring new meanings, which can make thisphenomenon sound plausible. Meanwhile, metaphorical thinking also offers a more reasonableexplanation of polysemy and the formation of abstract concepts. These findings areundoubtedly great significance for the study of English lexicology. We also find that metaphorand English neologism have close relationship which is well worth exploring further. As ZhaoYanfang mentioned, metaphor，as people's important cognitive style，has an important role inpeople's understanding things, formation of things' conceptual structure, and development oflanguage. In traditional lexical semantics，the changing of word meanings is attributed tohistorical and social factors. These factors are certainly important factors in meaning's change,but are only external factors not internal ones which are derived from cognitive thinking oflanguage users. It shows that the study of internal factors is the uppermost direction for thefuture researches.
