Conclusion


A learner' s capability of English dictionary use reflects concretely his or hercapability of English learning. Dictionary use is critical and significant to fosteringEFL learners' self-learning ability. It is worth probing into how to guide EFLlearners to make choice on different dictionary types for different needs and make fulluse of both paper dictionary and e-dictionary. By improving the capacity ofdictionary use, EFL learners can further improve their self-learning skills andefficiency. Guiding learners to use a dictionary is actually a process of teaching themto fish instead of giving them a fish. So before guidance, teachers should first studysome relative lexicographic knowledge systematically and be aware of the features ofdifferent dictionaries comprehensively.According to the findings of this survey, most respondents lacks a comprehensiveand scientific understanding of merits and faults of both e-dictionary and paperdictionary. Teachers should lead learners to combine the merits of the two types andmake a rational use of them. In addition, learners should be suggested to use a paperdictionary more.
Wan and Ling (2005) also suggested the significance and necessity of dictionaryuse in various language learning activities. Using a dictionary in the correct andproper way is considered as an important language learning strategy. Nowadays,various e-dictionaries are booming in the campus. It is absolutely necessary to open accurse for non-English majors to guide them in using a dictionary. They alsosuggested a gradation teaching framework based on learners' competence anddemand, including a required course for primary level and a optional course foradvanced level.In the dictionary of the vigorous development of today is necessary in college nonEnglish Majors English dictionary use.
