1.1 Research Background

It plays an important role in languageteaching and learning. All of the basic abilities including listening, speaking, reading and writing aregreatly influenced by vocabulary. Students can read and speak on condition that they have enoughvocabulary. One of the most famous linguistics Wikins (1974) once clearly indicated that “without grammar,very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” He believed that the level of alanguage learner was distinguished by whether learners can use vocabulary properly. Learners can not becategorized as the level of native speakers without such ability even if there are no grammatical mistakes intheir sentences. Allen (1983) also emphasized that “lexical problems frequently interfere withcommunication; communication breaks down when people do not use the right words.” When a personstarts to learn a new language, the first thing he comes across is vocabulary. Therefore, the first and mostimportant step in the process of language learning is vocabulary.
In China, both teachers and students of foreign language teaching and learning may be familiarwith the metaphor that the structure is the frame of the language building and the lexical items are theindividual bricks. That is, learning a language, to some extent, is mastering the structures of the language. Itis believed that once the structure has been mastered, what is left is to fill the lexical items into those slotscontained in the grammar. Chinese students are required to or are willing to remember a large amount ofwords appearing. However, it seems that vocabulary learning has been focusing on memorizing lists ofisolated words. Little attention is paid to the collocations of the words. The students might recognize thesingle item and its meaning, but their creative and productive skills cannot be improved thoroughly.Generally speaking, the teaching of English vocabulary had been undervalued and neglected in Englishlanguage instruction. It is usually felt that words learning, as a kind of low-level intellectual activity, can beeasily learned by root learning, which may result in that students who have remembered lots of words havetrouble in expressing themselves clearly and correctly by using proper words. As English teachers we are responsible for the solutions of problems. How to teach English vocabulary efficiently according toteaching aims? Does lexical chunk shed some light?In order to inquire the main difficulties of students’ on vocabulary learning, a questionnaire wascarried out before the research. According to the analysis of the questionnaire survey, many students realizethe importance of vocabulary learning. Although they spend much time in remembering vocabulary afterclass, they still make a lot of mistakes about vocabulary in multiple choices and compositions. That’sbecause they have a difficulty in mastering the frequently used phrases, collocation and idiomaticexpressions which are the main focus of tests.
