Chapter Two Literature review

This chapter is mainly composed of four parts. First, there will be a detailedintroduction of meme including the definition and lifecycle of a meme. Second, there willbe an introduction of memetics and the studies on memetics at home and abroad. Third, apresentation will be given of some of the definitions of vocabulary teaching andvocabulary learning strategies. Also, a simple review of English vocabulary teaching willbe shown. Finally, it will demonstrate vocabulary meme teaching and will lay out thestudies on the application of memetics in vocabulary teaching.

2.1 Meme
The meme is the core term and premise of memetics. Initially, this section gives outthe definition of the meme to find out the definition of memetics. Then it displays thelifecycle of the meme in order to describe the vocabulary meme teaching method.When it comes to the definition of meme, Darwin (1976) draws the conclusion that ameme is a unit of cultural transmission or a unit of imitation. He also claims that “just asgenes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperm oreggs, memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via aprocess which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation” (Darwin,1976:192). In otherwords, a conclusion can be drawn that a meme is an essential unit of culture that resides inone’s brain and is copied especially by imitation. This makes a rational explanation forhuman behavior and cultural evolution.Since then, there have been several additional definitions that have been advanced.The author will endeavor to show some of the representative definitions raised by manyscholars such as Moritz (1990), Damel (1991), Wilkins (1998) and Blackmore (1999).Moritz (1990) thinks that the meme is a pattern of information. He contends that aperson’s memory has the ability to be transmitted to another person’s memory. Thisincludes anything that can be learned or remembered, such as ideas, knowledge, habits,beliefs, skills, and images.

2.2 Memetics

The research theory of this thesis, memetics, is based on Darwin's evolutionaryviewpoint. It is a new theory that is rarely applied to English vocabulary teaching. In thissection, the author introduces the definition of memetics and gives out the related studieson memetics at home and abroad.Memetics, based on Darwin’s evolutionary theory, is a new theory to explain the lawof cultural evolution. Memetics is the theoretical and empirical science that studies thereplication, spread, and evolution of memes. Although there more or less still exist somearguments for memetics they continually keep an ascending and developing tendency byentering into all sorts of fields. “Memetics, which has been expected for a long time,finally forms an entity between biology, psychology, and cognitive science” (Brodie,1996:13). It is noticeable that in his best seller the Gene the core term of memetics is“meme”. According to it, a meme is “a unit of cultural transmission” or “a unit of imitation”(Darwin, 1976:192). And a meme is namely that someone learns everything by the imitation or someone pass what he has learned to others by imitation.
