Chapter One Introduction
At the beginning of the
thesis, the first chapter contains mainly the foundation of thewhole thesis. Initially, the background of the research will be mentioned. Then, the purposeand significance of the research will be introduced. Finally, there will be the organizationof the study itself.
1.1 Background of the research
It is universally acknowledged that English has become critically important due to itspopularity as a global language. In order to cater to the trends in English development,China has regarded English as the second language that people need to learn. This is due tothe fact that English has been an essential part in the life of the Chinese, especially for thestudent. In the process of English teaching, there is obviously a fundamental role for thelearning of vocabulary. The status and importance of vocabulary teaching have beenconfirmed by many experts and scholars in English teaching. As a result, senior highschools have raised some new requirements for vocabulary learning. However, someproblems have been found in English teaching. In particular, this includes being short ofvocabulary and vocabulary learning strategies as well as the inappropriate use ofvocabulary. Therefore, students are in urgent need of help in vocabulary teaching andlearning.

1.2 Purpose of the research
Since the 1970’s, many experimental studies and empirical researches have beencarried out on English vocabulary teaching. With the improvement of English teaching andthe introduction of memes, an increased number of researchers in China have begun toapply memetics to some aspects of English teaching including vocabulary teaching.In the experiment between EC and CC classes, the EC will use the vocabulary memeteaching, while the CC will still use the traditional method of vocabulary teaching in seniorhigh school. In this thesis, as this is done, there are several aims to be realized.The first aim is that the author wants to find out whether the vocabulary memeteaching will produce positive effect for the senior high students’ vocabulary learningstrategies. The successful outcome of this will show that vocabulary meme teaching has apositive effect on English vocabulary learning strategies for the senior high school studentsin the experiment. Also, it will demonstrate that the students achieve a better understandingof vocabulary learning, form a more positive attitude towards English vocabulary learningbeliefs and effectively cultivate students’ vocabulary learning strategies.The second aim is that the author hopes to justify the contention that vocabularymeme teaching will improve students’ vocabulary proficiency to impact their vocabularyscores during testing. Since vocabulary directly affects the students’ English level to a largedegree, it follows that the improvement of the vocabulary scores means the improvementof the overall English scores. And it can further prove that the vocabulary meme teachingapproach is more effective than traditional vocabulary methods. It will show that thevocabulary meme teaching uses a new pattern to teach vocabulary effectively. Itaccomplished this by meeting the various needs of the vocabulary teaching, such as freemorphemes, affixes, roots and bound morphemes as well as lexical chunks together withthe major rules of word formation and popular vocabulary learning strategies.
