Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
As the research paradigm in the field of linguistics has witnessed anunprecedented shift,the study of SLA has evolved from focusing on the form oflanguage to zeroing in on the usage of language recently.The'innateness hypothesis'predominated the study of language for a long time,but as it gradually lost ground,usage-based theories like connectionism and frequency effects emerged.Thesetheories have developed into research focus(Wang,2009)and have had a notableimpact on the study of SLA(Ellis&Collins,2009).
Back in the prevalence of behaviorism,the“stimulus-response hypothesis”waslong considered to be the fundamental theory of frequency.In other words,it issimpler to reinforce a linguistic unit if it occurs more frequently,which facilitateslearning.In accordance with usage-based language acquisition theory,the essential oflanguage acquisition is to create the matching and linking between form and functionthrough linguistic representations.The prerequisites for language acquisition,in linewith these ideas,are exposure and repetition.SLA also involves practice andexperience.Learners are initially exposed to a variety of linguistic paradigms fromlanguage input,and then through processing,inducing,and generalizing,abstract andgeneralized language forms are generated(Bybee,2000,2006).As people proceedfrom the concrete to the abstract in this process,each exposure will lead to slightchanges in the linguistic structure,which is the result of the repeated occurrence ofthe discourse.Ellis(2002)added that frequency is a crucial component in languageacquisition.The formation of language is based on specific co-use,common featuresthat recur in subsequent activities,and the language in which these features arereinforced(Bybee,2006).Consequently,language acquisition relies heavily on howfrequently a person is exposed to a given linguistic structure.
1.2 Research Purposes and Significance
At present,there aren't many studies out there that incorporate frequency withphrasal verbs.These results demonstrate that vocabulary acquisition is a gradualprocess that necessitates a steady increase in exposure frequency,even if studies onvocabulary acquisition have proven the correlation between vocabulary and frequencyeffects.It is believed that the likelihood that a target word will be acquired increaseswith exposure frequency(Webb,2007;Chen&Truscott,2010),although the focus ofthese previous studies was mostly on the word level and gave less attention to therelationship between frequency and phrasal verbs.Hill(2001)found that 70%of allmulti-word units exist in human languages.More crucially,Chinese students lack therequisite understanding of phrasal verbs and fall well short of native speakers in termsof the awareness of lexical chunks.These are the main elements that determine the authenticity of the language(Xiao,2011).The relationship between frequency effectsand phrasal verb acquisition among junior high school pupils must thus be furtherexplored.This study aims to combine frequency effects with the acquisition of phrasalverbs,explore the relationship between the two,and increase the acquisitionefficiency of phrasal v本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
