Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The English language takes its place as the most universal language in the world, which entitle it not only to be spoken and learned in the English speaking countries, but also widely learned and used in other non-English speaking countries for various reasons. And in China, learning English can be traced back to the sixteenth century for commercial needs, and given the largest number of English learners, China qualify as the top English-learning country (Tae-Young, 2021). And for the school Education, the English language as a compulsory course, makes a profound impact on every student, such as the National College Entrance Examination, and even during the tertiary education, the English language remains to be learned for relative exams, for instance, millions of students took the CET every year at the college. But many students lack internal motivation for English learning, they learn English not because they have the intrinsic desire to the English language, but rather out of the pressure to complete their school course and pursue the higher education, which turned the learning into a painful obligation for most of students. And English is one of the most critical courses in curriculum system for senior high school students, however, as a foreign language, it not like other basic subjects, such as math and physics, which is the accumulation of scientific knowledge and cultivation of mentality, the language course is much more complex and requires the coordination of all aspects of the individual. And Wang Wei (2017) stated that there are still a large proportion of students cannot keep up with the regular English class and be in a critical condition, which urges English teachers to take measures in everyday teaching practice so as to improve the scholastic achievement of the English underachievers.
1.2 Significance and Purpose of the Study
The motivation of learners has always been an essential focus when individual difference is taken into account for examining why some learners have a greater achievement than others in the SLA context, and a great amount of related research was conducted by some researchers, such as Ellis (1985), Dornyei (1994), and Wen Qiufang and Wang Haixiao (1996). The results of these research show that motivation is endowed with properties to explain why some learners more want to learn, then accordingly, they are more likely to achieve a higher level proficiency (Liu Jiaxia et al., 2000; Hao Ruoping, 2001). Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the English underachievers in term of motivation.
First of all, General Senior High School Curriculum Standards : English (2020 Edition) is based on the idea of quality education, aiming to develop students’ English core competences, namely language competence, cultural consciousness, thinking disposition and learning ability (The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, 2017).
