he framework ofcognitive linguistics, with the employment of the conceptual metaphor theory,embodied philosophy and cultural model. The primary objective of the current studyis to answer the following three questions: Firstly, what conceptual metaphorsinvolving "water" can be extracted and abstracted in English and Chinese? Secondly,in what way are the mappings of “water，，metaphors between English and Chinesesimilar and different respectively? Thirdly, what underlying cognitive and culturalreasons may account for the similarities and differences of mapping of “water”metaphors in English and Chinese?

 

1.3 Research Methodology and Data Collection Approach研究方法和数据收集方法
Since language description is the foundation of language explanation, andexplanation is the goal of linguistic research, a full description of languagephenomenon and reasonable explanation to them should be made in order to conductlinguistic research. Consequently, the combination of descriptive and explanatoryanalysis is employed in this thesis. In the current study, "water" metaphors arecollected and described first, later the underlying cognitive and cultural reasons forthe similarities and differences of these metaphors are explained in detail from theperspective of cognitive linguistics.At the same time, contrastive analysis approach is a reliable approach for us tofind the essence of language from unlimited languages expressions, so it is employedin this study to show the similar and different metaphorical expressions of “water” inEnglish and Chinese. There are similarities in the process of metaphorconceptualization since all human cognitive activities are grounded on everydayphysical experience. At the same time, differences also exist in the process ofmetaphor conceptualization for the reason that human physical experience are closelyrelated to certain cultural models in different parts of the world. The Germanphilologist Wilhelmvon Von Humboldt stressed that a contrastive study is an accurateexploration of differences between languages. A research task will lose all thesignificances if the interaction between language and ethical spiritual power is notconsidered and analyzed in this exploration process. As a result, it is more importantto reveal the differences in the process of conceptualization in different culturalmodels.Although studies on metaphors has been thriving since the past three decades,most of the previous studies of metaphor are based on the approaches of introspection,and linguistic data applied for these studies are unnatural because they are either fromelicitation from native speakers or intuition of the researchers (Lakoff & Johnson,1980 ). Consequently, A down- to- top study approach which is based on natural andauthentic languages is required to verify and develop the modern metaphor theory.Meanwhile, with the development of computer technology, corpus linguistics hasplayed its role in the studies of morphology, syntax and discourse, and new studies aredemanded to support it. For this reason, combining the study of metaphor with thecorpus is an irresistible trend. The modern and scientific corpus-based approach fordata collection which ensures the credibility and validity of linguistic data can befurther explored in the field of cognitive linguistics for the study of metaphor.
