摘要:Having read books and articles concerning about FD/FI and part-of-speechacquisition, the author of this study has lots of interest of research in this field andchoose this topic for the following reasons。
Chapter I Introduction
1.1 Research background
More and more scholars have realized that learners’ difference have anactive effect on language learning. It emphasizes the active role of language learnersin class. Learners are taking most of the class time. And they are playing more andmore important roles in second language learning while teachers are performing asguides. Many researches have been done on learners’ differences, such as, personalityfactors, cognitive factors as well as affective factors. Learner-centered teaching havebeen widely promoted all over the world and accepted by most people recently. Iflearners are more aware of their learning condition and know what kind of learningstrategies they should use to complete different kinds of learning tasks, they willbecome more dependent learners and they will achieve more than those who take nonotice of their learning situations. However, some learners are not aware of their learning style or cognitive styleand they take little notice of the learning strategies, which leads to a poor languageefficiency in some way. What’ s more, some learners think little of their roles that theyplay in language learning and just rely on their teachers to offer the answers instead ofactive thinking by themselves; this also accounts for the lower achievements of themin language learning to some extent. Besides, the author finds out that a certainnumber of learners are not food at part-of-speech learning. Some of the learners oftencould not tell verbs from nouns or they could not use the verbs or adjectives correctly.It’s really a big problem, which will hinder their language learning and lead to a badresult in the end.

1.2 Research questions
This thesis aims to do experimental research on Chinese English learners’cognitive style and part-of-speech acquisition to find out answers to the followingquestions:What is the correlation between cognitive styles and part-of-speech acquisition?Do field independent learners learn better than field dependent learners in part-of-speech acquisition?The two questions will be testified in the chapter five according to the data andanalysis of the data. Having read books and articles concerning about FD/FI and part-of-speechacquisition, the author of this study has lots of interest of research in this field andchoose this topic for the following reasons:First, a great number of scholars have found out that FD/FI played anoutstanding part in learners’ second language learning. Many researchers and scholarshave made studies concerning about field-dependent and field-independent cognitivestyles and what they have found and concluded agreed with the assumptions offield-dependent and field-independent. Though, they all seem to prove that FD/FI isof great importance in affecting English learning and field-independent learnersperform better than field-dependent learners in learning, the findings of this theme arediverse. For example, some researchers confirmed that field independent learners aregood at English performance, but others proved that FD/FI had not had active relationwith English achievements
