摘要:Although IT has become an important research issue since the 1970s in the west,in China, it is still taking an initial course of probing into it compared with thewestern counterparts. Hysteretic as it is, there are many Chinese linguists take upresearches in this field from various aspects.

2.2 English Vocabulary Acquisition
Wilkins ( 1972 ) points out that “Without grammar, little can be conveyed;without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” In the process of English acquisition,vocabulary is a most important element to the English learners for that five traditionalbasic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating all dependon the learners’ warehouse of vocabulary. To make an exhaustive study on the lexicalfossilization, what we need to make clear first is to learn about some relativeinformation about vocabulary. This section will present a review of theories on thedefinition, the classification of vocabulary and some relative studies. From the extensive literature review, two dimensions are regarded as the primarycomponents: breadth and depth. Breadth of vocabulary ( hereinafter cited as BV ) hasbeen taken to refer to the quantity or number of words which learners know at aparticular level of language proficiency ( Nation, 2001 ), or “the number of words ofwhich a learner had at least some superficial knowledge of meaning” ( Qian, 2002 ).Depth of vocabulary knowledge ( hereinafter referred as DVK ) means the quality ofone’s knowledge about a word and it relates to the question of how well one knows aword. Recently various proposals have been made on the issues of lexical knowledge( Laufer, 1998; Nation, 1990, 2001; Qian, 2005; Read, 2000 ).

In the process of carrying out the questionnaire, the writer first makes a briefintroduction of lexical fossilization in order to make sure that the informants areaware of the intention of doing such research and shall be willing to cooperatepositively. According to the results of the questionnaire in the extensive survey, thesubjects’ attitude towards the lexical fossilization are shown below in tabular form.
