摘要:The data-driven learning model reflects the educational concept of “people-oriented”,according to different students’ degrees, needs and interests, the data-driven learning modelcould make use of retrieval and analytical tools to learn based on the model of discovery andvalidation, it is difficult for the other non-corpus learning model to realize.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
It is well known that any language learning is inseparable from the vocabulary;vocabulary plays a very important role in language learning. Vocabulary sustains thepronunciation and grammar. It is the basic unit of language and the cornerstone of improvinglearners’ language proficiency level. As Zimmerman says “Vocabulary is central to languageand of critical importance to the typical language learner”. (1997:134)Wilkins points out: “Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabularynothing can be conveyed.” (1972:111). Thus it can be seen that the importance of vocabularyin the process of English learning. Any language skills are unable to neglect vocabularyelements and exist independently. Proper use of words is the key to producing language andconveying meaning expression and transmission of meaning.Bollinger (1970) states that “the quantity of information in the lexicon far outweighs thatin any other part of the language, and if there is anything to the notion of redundancy it shouldbe easier to reconstruct a message containing just words than one containing just the syntacticrelations. The significant fact is the subordinate role of grammar. The most important thing isto get the words in”. Based on Bollinger, the most important factor that affects understandingand application is the vocabulary. Vocabulary is the smallest meaningful unit of language.Human thinking activities and the exchange of ideas firstly depends on vocabulary. Withoutmastering proficiently vocabulary, it is impossible to master a language well. A learner’svocabulary size directly influences his ability of language expression, and then affects hisabundance and accuracy degree of thoughts expressing. In this sense, a mastery of vocabularyis the basis of cultivating the students’ ability of comprehensive use of language andrepresents the learners’ level of foreign language.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
In recent years, the data-driven learning model has become the focus of Englishvocabulary learning. In order to break through the restraints of the traditional Englishvocabulary model and change students’ vocabulary learning ways with a kind of advancedteaching concept, the author will follow the previous studies and adopt the data-drivenlearning model in the senior high school English vocabulary classroom, and then try to findout the practical effect and significance of its application in the English vocabulary teachingand learning. This thesis mainly focuses on the practical application of data, which is animportant branch of applied linguistics.The data-driven learning model reflects the educational concept of “people-oriented”,according to different students’ degrees, needs and interests, the data-driven learning modelcould make use of retrieval and analytical tools to learn based on the model of discovery andvalidation, it is difficult for the other non-corpus learning model to realize.The practical significance of this study is as follows:First, this study can be regarded as a new attempt to combine corpus with the Englishvocabulary teaching and learning at senior high school. It aims to improve the students’interests, motivation of learning vocabulary, the students’ ability of mastering Englishvocabulary, and enlarge their vocabulary, create opportunities of using English vocabulary forthem.
