Music derived from Greek mousike, “art of the Muses” (Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, 1940), which is an important part of culture. Common elements of music include pitch, rhythm, dynamics, sonic qualities and other associated concepts. The definition of music varies according to different cultural and social context. Bel Canto is one of musical singing styles, which is typically Western in origin and form and expresses in the West in certain characteristic ways. Chinese traditional music derived from, or rooted in the long history of Chinese nation with accumulated rich aesthetic experience, which is obviously different from the Western classical music. In China a lot of singers started to explore Western Bel Canto from earlier last century, till now, except other minority music singing syltes, Bel Canto and Folk Singing are the two main styles of vocal music teaching in China’s vocal music education. (Wang 2007: 52) Also, researches on Bel Canto and Folk Singing in China are always the most important and popular subjects among Chinese musicians and singers.
Modern writers often use Bel Canto as a comprehensive label for all vocal performance between 16th century and 18th century, the term began to represent a “style” of singing since the middle of 19th century. (Duey 1951: 3-12; Toft 2013: 3) It is really hard to give a specific definition for Bel Canto, because it includes all kinds of elements and different scholars have their own focus. In Grove Dictionary, Bel Canto refers to “Italian vocal style of the 18th and early 19th centuries, the qualities of which include perfect legato production throughout the range, the use of a light tone in the higher registers and agile and flexible delivery” (Prose Works; Eng.trans., London 1894, iii, 202; iv, 238).
