摘要:The Old Man and the Sea is a song of praise about human sprit. Though the description of the sufferings Santiago endures and his courageous behavior in his fights with the marlin and the Sharks. Hemingway intends to tell us his philosophy of life: Though life is a lonely battle, it is a struggle that man should fight on with courageous and endurance.

In the novel, Santiago embarks on a sea journey and encounters a giant marlin. He battles alone to fight against it bravely until the end. The struggle makes him as a real hero. Though, he loses the marlin, he has won the sea battle. The sea symbolizes the society which is full of difficulties and battles. In Hemingway’s real life, he encounters suffering too much. During the two world wars, he injured several times and still remained hundreds of shrapnel in his body, which affect him until died. When he wrote the novel of Across the River and into the Tree. Which just like Santiago’s situation. Hemingway must confront with the critics views of disapproval. But he has not defeated like he said in The Old Man and the Sea. “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”
The sea is just like the life. It can give a man what he wants and need him to fight for what he wants. Most of the time man will face difficulties and troubles. However, only a man faces and fights against it with courage, endurance both physical and psychological pain and insist to the end, he can defeat the difficulties and change his fate, and become strong in his life to realize his aim.
3.2. Giant Marlin vs Ambitious Future
The giant marlin also has its symbolic meaning, which stands for the ambition and the future man pursues .
First of all, Hemingway is a famous writer in the world for he writes many marvelous masterpieces and gets honors of his two world war experiences. However, people aren’t satisfied with his current achievements and have further expectation to him. To Hemingway, he also has confidence in writing better works. Santiago goes to the symbol of ambition that that can prove he is still a strong old man .However, Hemingway is encountered with many disapprove criticism for the write the novel Across the River into the Trees . In the next ten years, he doesn’t write any novel again .Therefore, the critics said that his talent is exhausted. Facing this situation, just like the old man –Santiago, Hemingway is a strange writer and different from normal writers. His tough character forces him undefeated and not yield to difficulties .By contrast, Hemingway write this novel the Old Man and the Sea to prove he is a good writer and can write excellent works.
Second, the giant Marlin symbolize the nice future of pursues. Santiago doesn’t catch any single fish for eight- year days .People of all village consider that he is “Sacao” which is the worst form of unlucky. What’s more, the old man is in a poor situation: The shack was made of the tough bud shields of the royal palm which are called guano and the init there was a bed, a table, one chair, and a place on the dirt floor to look the charcoal. And he has to depend on Marlin bring food to him .Therefore, under this poor circumstance, Santiago must hook a big fish to change a people’s view and support his life.
