Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background
With the rapid development of science and technology, more and more people havecome to realize the importance of English. As we know there are four basic skills inEnglish learning. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening is oneof the most important ways to obtain and take in information. It’s also the process ofunderstanding and speaking. A Study from an American scientist named Wilga M.Rivers (1982) shows that in our daily life communication, we spend 9% of the time inwriting, 16% in reading, 30% in speaking, and 45% in listening. As you can see, people spend much more time in listening. However, comparing with the other skillsof speaking, reading and writing, listening comprehension has received less concernand attention in English language teaching in China. But you can see that some juniorstudents, who have learned English for more than three years, are still afraid tocommunicate with others in English. They still can’t make the natural conversationsand interviews in personal daily life. When they are asked to say something, orunderstand something which has words they have not learned before, sometimes theyare silent and sometimes they can say something, but little. Why is that? It is becausemost students haven’t grasped the method of how to listen and how to improve theirlistening proficiency.
From the above discussion we can know that many scholars have done a lot ofresearches which concern how to develop students’ listening proficiency. But up tonow, many junior English teachers are still applying traditional teaching method tolistening classroom. Because there are too many units in the textbook for them to go,they don’t have so much time to practice too much listening materials. Some of themusually act as “tape recorder”. They usually turn on the recorder and ask students tolisten to the materials carefully. Then they stand silently beside the students. Afterplaying the tape once or twice, teachers ask the students to finish the comprehension exercises, and then they check the answers and play the tape once again to allow thestudents to correct their answers by themselves. After that many students don’t reallyunderstand the listening materials. But the teachers pay no attention of these. Usually, they play the tape many times sentence by sentence without any explanation, andstudents only hear oceans of unfamiliar, strange sounds. Thus students are not in factshown how to comprehend and deal with the problems in the process of listening.Instead, they are asked what they have “learnt” from listening. When they comeacross the same problems again next time they will be still at a loss. Some of theteachers do teach the students some ways to improve their listening comprehension, but they are busy with their teaching and family chores, they spend little timemonitoring the students’ listening learning.
