摘要:This paper aims to provide a way of educational method for the reform of oral English by the application of activities in the oral English class. Activity-based approach is an effective teaching method to the improvement of students’ oral competence in junior middle school, because it caters for the nature of language by providing chances for students to live the language.
I. Introduction
At present, English plays an important role in Chinese people’s life and work. Its function is more and more prominent. More than 300 million Chinese people are learning the language, but how many people have learnt it well? There is a general phenomenon among the English majors that their ability of verbal communication falls far behind their basic knowledge and theory level. That is to say, they lack practical English application. They can hardly use what they have learnt in real life. According to a recent survey, only 4 percent of students who major in English can speak and use English to communicate efficiently after graduation from colleges. This formation of phenomenon and trend are not transient, nor accidental, but long-term and inevitable, because people have been influenced by the test-oriented Education and “instillation” teaching methods, which dates back to junior middle school English teaching. The classroom has been “teacher-centered” and students have to take in passively. Some students are excellent in grammar, vocabulary, but poor in oral English.
Recent years, China carries out a series of reform on junior English teaching, and oral English teaching is concerned widely. In addition, the new teaching materials also lay emphasis on oral English, and teachers, to some degree, stress the training of language application. But there is little progress in oral English, and the present condition is still unsatisfactory.
How to teach English effectively has puzzled many English teachers for a long period. A learner’s mastery of a foreign language is ultimately measured not by how much he knows about it but how well he can use it. Therefore, English teachers should put emphasis on the students’ use of English instead of on their knowledge about English. That is to say, teachers should teach English for communication and design suitable activities in class in order to create a suitable atmosphere for students to practice their oral English. By means of the activity-based approach, teachers can provide students with a lot of opportunities to open their mouths and exchange their ideas with others in English, thus improving their oral English effectively.
II. Necessity of Activity-based Approach in Oral English Teaching
At present, National Education Department regards the English study as an important measure for education reform. But compared with foreign education, it is not enough. In abroad, students’ study become more and more liberal, and students don’t worry about the results of examination, so they pay more attention to the usage of knowledge. But in China, teachers and parents force the students to do much exercise in order to pass all kinds of examinations. So there is no time and energy to develop students’ competences of English speaking.
2.1 Disadvantages of Traditional Approach
In Chinese traditional education concepts, headmasters and teachers believe that good students are quiet ones. In the classroom, teachers always require students to keep silent, in class, students only use their eyes and ears to see and to hear, and seldom use their mouths to communicate with teachers and classmates.
