摘要:Recently, MAI is widely used in English classroom teaching in almost all the Junior High schools inChina. With the application of MAI, the effect of the English classroom teaching can be improved in manyways, thus MAI are chosen by authorities of more and more schools in the teaching work.
Chapter Two Literature Review
.2.1 Definitions of Multimedia and MAI
Scholars have raised all kinds of different definitions of multimedia and multimedia technology, butthere are no universally accepted ones. The definition of multimedia given in the dictionary is like this: “themultimedia technology is the transmission that combines media of communication( the text, graphics,sound, etc.)or human-computer interaction involving text, graphics, voice, and video, often includesconcepts from hypertext. ”Gayeski (1993: 4) regards multimedia as “a kind of computer driven interactivecommunication system which produce, reserve, send, and retrieve textual, pictural, and acoustic networksof information.” He Gaoda and Zhong Zhiying (2006) consider that multimedia is the interactive system setup on the basis of computers. Various media information like texts, data, graphs, images, audio and videocan be manufactured at one time and logically connected. Thus, various kinds of media information jointlyfunctions better than the individual one.Then a generic term “multimedia” refers to the continuing or by synchronous application of all kindsof media in a given presentation or self-learning program (Sharon E. Smaldino et. al, 2005:14). Andmultimedia in this paper can be regarded as a kind of computer-based technology mixing more than twomedia to produce, reserve, send, and retrieve information. It is the combination of texts, images, sounds,animation and video. As for the profits of instructional multimedia, a lot of educational resources can beprovided, for example, encyclopedias, databases, electronic books, simulations, instructional games.

2.2 Relevant Researches on MAI
The relevant MAI researches abroad initiated since the 1960s. During that period of time computertechnology developed rapidly. MAI appeared with the background of the popular of its predecessor CAI,and instruction at that time was facing great challenges. In a CAI instructional environment computers canintegrate both audio and video materials to assist teaching and learning. Higgins and Johns (1984) generallyintroduced computer technology and the of computer technology in classroom. Based on CAI Hainline(1987) gave some new descriptions of CALL. And with the development of CAI and CALL, multimediatechnology appeared and began to be popular. Kozma (1991) explained his idea that the learners and mediaactively collaborated to construct their knowledge, which was contrary to those who believed that mediawere only the transferring devices of teaching content. His research manifested that a particular mediumcould affect the learners’ way of expressing and processing information, if it was together with the properteaching process. Therefore, for the individual learner who has specific learning tasks one media mayinfluence learning differently from other medium. For the purpose of knowing accurately about the effectsand characters of multimedia computer system, educational psychologists have done a lot of experimentalstudied.
