摘要:本文是初中英语教学论文,In junior middle school, English learning activities are designed according to theprinciple of topic-based teaching. Each unit is set around a topic. The topics lead the studentsto explore the way to learn and use English through experience, practice, participation,cooperation and exchanges.

In manylanguages, a word may have many different meanings.Based on the definition of vocabulary in Oxford Dictionary, vocabulary can be viewedas the total number of words one knows or uses in a particular language and a list of wordswith the meanings in the book for learning a foreign language. “Word is a unit of expressionthat native speakers may recognize by intuition, whether it is expressed in spoken or writtenform.” (Hu, 2008, p.55)In Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, it defines word as 'the smallest unitof language that people can understand if it is said or written on its own' and definesvocabulary as 'all the words that someone knows or uses'.Word may be seen as a set of sound segments or writing letters between two pauses orblanks. Word can be treated as a general term and as a specific term. Word is a grammaticalunit. The grammar of a particular language contains a set of layers, and word is one of them.Hatch and Brown (2001) defines vocabulary as 'a list or set of words for a particularlanguage or a list or a set of words that individual speakers of a language might use.' As far asDavid Nunan (2005) is concerned, vocabulary is more than lists of target language words. Asa part of the language system, vocabulary is intimately interrelated with grammar.

2.2 Researches on Vocabulary Teaching
The study of vocabulary teaching present at home and abroad is mainly discussing thebreadth and depth of vocabulary, teaching of vocabulary knowledge, the influence of the inputand output on vocabulary application ability and vocabulary teaching in direct and indirectlearning. In recent years there are also mental lexicon and context vocabulary teaching. Early people’s understanding of vocabulary teaching is relatively fuzzy at broad. Theylack enough understanding about their importance. Learners memorize vocabulary throughmechanical and simple ways.French teaching experts Mr. Ghosn studied language through his experience of learningGerman in Germany. He puts forward the new sequence of foreign language learning method,which claims that foreign language learning should begin from the sentence, daily life usagerather than isolated words; and words should be learned in the sentence, because in this way,the word is endowed with a certain context.In the 1930s, “vocabulary limited movement” arose. So-called limited vocabularymeans using limited vocabulary according to the word list or other standard “in preparationfor language teaching reading material”.In the sixties, linguistics advocated Chomsky’s conversion linguistics, whichincreasingly strengthens the viewpoint of “vocabulary limited”.
