Chapter Four Data Analysis and Discussion

This chapter is about the analysis and discussion of test and questionnaire’sresults mentioned in chapter three. The software SPSS 17.0 was used to analyzestatistical data. The results of the analysis were put to answer research questions pointin point.

4.1 Analysis of the questionnaire

In this research, the author investigated questions by using the questionnairefrom Wang (2008)’s questionnaire of writing blocks for students who study English,and the author did some changes in the questionnaire. There are twenty-four questionsin the questionnaire. Among all the questions, seven questions are of the blocks ofcontent, ten questions are about the blocks of structure, seven questions are for theblocks of language. Five-point scale was adopted .According to the self-evaluation, the students’ have blocks in the three aspectsof content, structure and language, and all their mean values all around 3, especiallythe block of content and the block of language (exceed 3). It shows that studentshave very serious blocks in English writing. Table 4.2 indicates the students’ block ofcontent.From table 4.2 we can see, the third question “students can not collect enoughmaterials previous to writing” has the largest mean, so the students thought thebiggest block was learning materials in the content part.The mean of the first question “students feel mind blank and have no ideas” is3.48 indicating that the students often have nothing to say about the given topics. Thestudents needed a lot of time to consider what to wrote, which is proved by the secondquestion (mean=3.55). The fifth “no good examples to certify my point” (mean=3.74)and the sixth “writing content is poor” (mean=3.71) are very similar which is stillbecause of shortage of writing materials to support ideas. The seventh question is“Depth of composition is not enough” ( mean=3.64).The block in the fourth question “lack unique insights, and it is difficult to writesomething new” ( mean=2.83) is not very serious.

Conclusion

After the experiment and data analysis of this chapter, the author presents aconclusion of the thesis.
