Some sordid behaviors which occur in the name of patriotism infringe other countries’ benefits in the process of their development. It will do harm to the relationship between America and other nations and consequently affect the security and stability of the whole world. A. Contributions of Patriotism to Americans’ Achievements The first large-scaled activity for commemorating the national flag in America is the 100th anniversary of founding the state in 1876. In 1949, the Congress acknowledged that “The American National Flag’s Day” is June 14 every year formally. So whenever the day is coming, each state will hold all kinds of commemoration ceremonies and they will hang the national flag in the public places to show their respects. Every July 4, the whole country will become the ocean of American national flag. People crowd into the local downtown areas with flags one after another at dusk to hold many colorful shows of music, dances and arts in the open air; they also watch the firework together on the square. All of these are just to celebrate the festival voluntarily. America is not only a multinational country, but also a country with different races. The almost people are white people and its rate is around 2/3; the rates of the Black and the Latin American are both around 13%; the Asians about 4%. So there are so many problems in America: the complicated formation of races, the contradictions of parties, the conflicts of religions and the fights between classes. But when the calamities are coming, what power make all Americans unite and melt together who come from different places of the world with different cultures and different level of property as well as different color of skins, eyes, hairs, physiques and figures. The answer is only one: the patriotism! From the history of America, people know that only patriotism can form a wide “united front”, consolidate the political power and unite the popular feelings. If any thorny contradiction or problem about the conflicts of interest occurs in the country eve ry time, the authority will work things out to find something in common that the people can accept more often than not. They hold high the mental flag of patriotism and they have established an ironed will of the United States in the inner soul of the immigrants between the new and the old from generation to generation through the steady and protracted edification of patriotism about more than 200 years. The Americans have achieved a lot not only in economy, politics, science and technology, military affairs and national defense, but also in other fields, such as sports, art, education and so on.
