2. Historical Changes
Everything in the world is changing and developing. Nothing is static. Language is surely without exception. After the Norman Conquest, the Norman lords spoke French while their English subjects retained their old tongue. For a long time the scholar wrote in Latin and the courtier in French. Now English is spoken over the world. The change is tremendous. So is American slang. Historical changes make some slang vanish from English language. Meanwhile, some new ones come out, which result from new things.
American slang came into being with the invasion of Spain, France, Demark and Italy. In the early 17th century, new generations living in Virginia and Plymouth began to use slang. They used “Goodbye” to replace “God be with you” for the first time(王莉.2006). Historical changes give birth to many new slang. Yankee is an excellent example of a widely known slang whose origins cannot be determined. The best hypothesis is that Yankee comes from Dutch Janke,   a nickname for Jan, “John.” Evidence can be found in the Oxford English Dictionary that the forms Yankey, Yanky, and Yankee were used as surnames or nicknames in the 17th century. The word Yankee is first found in one of our modern senses in 1758, the sense being “a New Englander.” The 17th-century nickname for Jan was derisive, and the first instances of our word show the term being used derisively by the British for New Englanders. After the Battle of Lexington (1775) New Englanders dignified the name. The British were responsible for application of the term to all Americans (a use first recorded around 1784); and Southerners, for application of the term to Northerners (first recorded in 1817).
Since the 50s and 60s of 21st century, there appeared several types of young people. They were called as beatniks. These young men act and dress with pointed, often exaggerated disregard for what is generally thought proper and who is given to radical and extravagant social criticism or self-expression. Then the word “hippy or hippie”, “flower children” and “yuppies” came into fashion. Hippies referred to those who oppose and reject many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially those who advocate extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles. Flower children were the young hippies wearing flowers on their chests as symbol of love. Yuppies referred to young city or suburban residents with a well-paid professional job and an affluent, materialistic lifestyle. They paid attention to their appearance and behaved gracefully.

3. Historical events.
Since slang came into existence, people left some slang whenever something influential happens. For example, in the 40s of last century when the cold war befell, we have some new slang like hotline which is frequently used nowadays. After Vietnam War and Watergate scandal, American generally lost heart to the government and the political dignitaries. Therefore, corresponding slang were created immediately. These words avoided to mention politicians directly and sometimes are full of irony. The phrase “boys in the backroom” refers to politicians who connive something dirty in the dark. “The big lie” means swear论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
