pragmatically.Theoretically, the innovative and intact analytic frame in this research offers avaluable reference to the research ways on temporal metaphors and the comparativestudies on English and Chinese.Besides, the static spatial-temporal mode with the observer facing the past inanalysis of the identifications and differences in English and Chinese temporalmetaphors, is an enrichment and supplement for the traditional analysis of temporalmetaphor cognition based on two types-"time moving metaphor" and “ego movingmetaphor", which is a classical foundation for the spatial temporal cognition but isunable to give out reasonable explanations to many language phenomena.Thirdly, it supplements the researches at the vertical level of the spatial temporalcognition and provides with a way for analyzing the spatial cognition.Fourthly, the contrastive study goes from the cognitive linguistic perspective to theanalysis on the language representations, and deep into the cultural source，providing anew conceivable comparative train of thought for the English and Chinese comparativeresearches. And it also supplements the comparison of English and Chinese temporalmetaphors from a new perspective and offers others with references to consult.Pragmatically, it studies cultural implications and temporal concepts inintercultural communications from an analysis of English and Chinese temporalmetaphors, which are:(1) Beneficial to understanding our own temporal culture through studying theWestern temporal culture objectively so as to take in their advantages to nourish us.(2) Helpful for strengthening the mutual understanding of temporal conceptsbetween people with different languages and cultures，and decreasing obstacles andmisunderstandings in cross-cultural communications.

　　1.3 Analytic Methods分析方法
　　This research makes a contrastive study of English and Chinese temporal metaphorconcepts in seven aspects-'spatial temporal metaphors', ‘personalized temporalmetaphors', 'materialized temporal metaphors', ‘event temporal metaphors'，'abstracted temporal metaphors，，'colorized temporal metaphors' and ‘allusion temporalmetaphors' from a perspective of rhetoric. Inside the ‘spatial metaphors', the analysis iscarried out at two levels: the dynamic spatial-temporal metaphors with facing the future,which includes the traditional two cognitive aspects: "time moving metaphors，，and"ego moving metaphors，，，and the static spatial-temporal metaphors with facing the past,which is based on the cognition of spatial positions. The distinctions of the spatialtemporal metaphors of the two languages are analyzed at both the horizontal level andthe vertical level. At the vertical level the spatial temporal metaphors are expoundedwith different observation points and the states of the observer. And the languagephenomena of temporal metaphors are analyzed by means of exploring their culturalsource on the basis of the relation of language，culture and thought. Finally, in light ofthe above research, cultural implications and enlightenments are explored in theWestern and Chinese temporal cultures.
