Chapter Five Suggestions for Avoiding Pragmatic Failure


5.1 Enhancing English Cultural Teaching
Cultural awareness and creativity are necessities for interlocutors on account ofdifferent cultures. In the process of communication, language should be applied indifferent ways according to different people. The use of language finally should relyon the contexts and interlocutors, no matter what kind of communicative standardshave been given. English has been regarded as one of the most important languages inthe world, which compels us to attach importance to not only communicative contentsbut also English teaching methods. Learners of English should concentrate oncommunicative competence instead of the linguistic knowledge of the target languagesimply.English teachers should not only acquainted with the importance of differentcultures and socio-linguistic knowledge between Chinese and English, but also impartsuch important awareness to the learners of English. One mission of teachers is tomake the second language learners have knowledge of pragmatic differences in theprocess of learning.

Conclusion


Many researchers have emphasized that students should not only have a highlevel of linguistic competence, but also possess the high pragmatic competence inintercultural communication. Considering the current situation that pragmatic failuresare always made by Chinese learners of English, an experimental study on pragmaticfailure, which mainly analyzes speech acts and the influences of different cultures, hasbeen produced. Therefore, to improve students’ pragmatic competence is an urgentmission for English teaching.The followings are the major findings in this thesis:1) Chinese learners of English with high linguistic competence don't have thecorresponding level of pragmatic competence.2) A lot of pragmatic failures are committed by Chinese college students due totheir unconsciousness of cultural differences.3) The method of cultural differences input is an effective way on reducingpragmatic failure of Chinese learners of English.These findings indicate that one of the main reasons may be the influence ofcultural differences. Therefore, for teachers, it is necessary to input different culturalknowledge to their students with the purpose of developing students’ pragmaticcompetence.
