Associated British Foods

1. situation of ABF
Associated British Foods plc (ABF) is a holding company. The Company is engaged in the processing and manufacture of food worldwide and textile retailing in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. The Company has five industries: grocery, sugar, agriculture, ingredients and retail. This company in UK is a very famous enterprise, but in the world industry, it has some gaps, so in this report, the author will analyze it with another company from finance point of view (https://cn.reuters.com/investing/quotes/search?searchType=name&search=ABF&goButton.x=16&goButton.y=9).
1.1 2009 liquidity and gearing ratios
1.1.1 liquidity ratios
Liquidity ratios can be also called as Current ratio, the formula is LR= Current assets/ Current liabilities (Hendriksen, 2002). This index refers to balance the ability before short-term debt is due, Enterprise current assets can be turned into a cash to pay the debts(Winter, 2009).
Balance sheet of 2009

In ABF, through analysis of the annual report and balance sheet of 2009, LR=1173/389=3.02. Generally speaking, if LR>2, asset liquidity is well, so ABF company has good asset liquidity.

1.1.2 gearing ratios
Gearing ratio is the ratio of enterprise’ all liabilities to all the source of funds, to indicate the proportion of the enterprise’ liabilities to all funds (Hendriksen, 2002). Gearing ratio refers to the relationship between the debt and assets or the net assets, it reflects the ability for enterprises to pay the principal and interests on the debt (Winter, 2009). Generally speaking, GR=net debt/total capital. In ABF, GR=999/5747=17%. This indicates that ABF company has less loan risk, and at the same time this company lacks vitality.
1.2 2010 liquidity and gearing ratios
1.2.1 liquidity ratios
