Chapter Four Reanalysis of the Syntactic Structure of the English Resultative Construction

4.1 Introduction
The previous studies do contribute to enrich the research on the Englishresultative construction. However, they can not give a unified explanation of theEnglish resultative construction. The syntactic properties of the English resultativeconstruction are still in confusion. Meanwhile, the syntactic status of the resultativepredicate is not clarified. These problems inevitably lead to the chaos of the analysison the syntactic structure of the English resultative construction.This study is managed to solve the problems in the analyses of previous studies.It aims to reveal the syntactic properties of the English resultative construction andput forward a unified explanation of the syntactic structure of it. In a specific way, inorder to reanalyze and reconstruct the syntactic structure of the English resultativeconstruction, deductive reasoning will be employed as the primary methodology, andreasoning will strictly comply with logical principles in order to give a proper, clearand unified explanation.In this Chapter, the syntactic properties of the resultative construction will bereanalyzed. Based on the basic logic frame of human language proposed by ProfessorZhao (2010), the reanalysis on the syntactic structure of the English resultativeconstruction is proposed.

Conclusion

The main point of this thesis is the syntactic strcture of the English resultativeconstruction. As an important but complex language phenomenon, it always arouseslinguist’s interests. This thesis reanalyzes the English resultative construction in theframework of Generative Grammar, taking the basic ideas in syntactic study of theGenerative Grammar as the spirit of this research. Based on the N&S conditions, thisthesis firstly demonstrate the basic logic frame of human language, and get theconclusion that NP and VP are the fundamental elements of the sentence. Then, inorder to get a clear and plausible explanation of the English resultative construction,this thesis analyzes some basic features related to the English resultative construction,such as the syntactic status of the resultative predicate. The resultative predicate ispositioned as an adjunct of the matrix verb, modifying the action of the verb. Sincethe differences between the resultative construction and the depictive constructionare in confusion, it is necessary to clarify them. After analyzing the difference, thethesis gets the conclusion that they are isomorphic. Based on these basic features ofthe resultative construction being revealed, it is safe to list the syntactic properties ofit. At last, a relatively unified and clear explanation for the syntactic structure of theEnglish resultative construction is unveiled.
