attempt to answer the following questions: 1. Besides, adjectives and verbs, are there any other part of speech that can appear in the structure? 2. What are the semantic features of these words which can appear in the structure? 3. Whether the part of the speech of predicate “X” has an influence on the meaning of “X de bu neng zai X” structure. We will answer these questions by examining the characteristics of “X”. We can see from examples (48a)-(48e) that not all the adjectives can be the “X”. Adjectives “简单(simple)” and “老(old)” can fit in “X de bu neng zai X” structure, while adjectives like “绿油油 (dark green)” ,“木制(wooden)” and “笔直(straight)” are not permitted into the structure. Gradable adjectives are adjectives like “old” “beautiful” and “tall”. You can be very beautiful or more beautiful. Gradable adjectives have scales and can be modified by degree adverb such as very, more and most which correspond to the Chinese adverbs “很”, “更” and “最” respectively. Adjectives in examples (48a) and (48b) possess the feature of gradability in that they can be modified by degree adverbs such as “很简单”, “更简单”, “最老”.

(2) “X de bu neng zai X” structure has two different meanings: a. The degree of “X” has reached its maximum; b. “X” can not continue any more.
(3) The difference of the meaning of the structure is influenced by the gradability of the predicate. a. When “X” is a gradable predicate, adverb “zai” is a comparative marker and “bu neng zai X” is the degree complement of “X”. Therefore, the meaning of the structure takes (2a); Bare nouns also can fit in the structure in that they are coerced by context to possess the property of adjectives when they express chartering features. b. When “X” is a non-gradable predicate, adverb “zai” means “continuation”. “bu neng zai X” is the resultative complement of “X”. Therefore, the meaning of the structure takes (2b); The only Non-gradable predicates can fit in the structure is non-gradable verbs which possess the feature of (-telos, +duration).
(4) This analysis provides a degree-based analysis to the structure, which helps us understand better the meaning of
