5.1 Comparative Test
This chapter describes a detailed process of data collection and analysis .In order toinvestigate the reading effect of traditional printed text reading and hypertext reading, acomparative test has been carried out. And the descriptive statistics are analyzed anddiscussed in this chapter. Are there significant differences between the reading effects of hypertext and traditionalprinted text?The research method of this question adopts an Independent-sample T test. All theparticipants’ final scores of reading comprehension test in the two groups: hypertext readinggroup (HG) and traditional reading group (TG) have been put into the computer.Consequently, with the help of SPSS13.0 software, all collected data are analyzed bydescriptive statistics. The general reading effects of hypertext and traditional printed text inthe web-based environment are shown in Table 5.1:

Conclusion


Hypertext is not just an “electronic version” of traditional printed text. Hyperlinks inhypertext reading can offer some related background knowledge for readers, which can helpreaders to get a better understanding form the text. Schema theory believes that readingprocess not only just includes a bottom-up reading mode emphasizing on linguisticknowledge but also includes a top-down process of cognition, which lays stress on the role ofreaders’ cultural background knowledge in reading comprehension. Carrell(1984) believe thatreaders’ schematic knowledge providing some related cultural background knowledge canhelp readers to get a better understanding. And according to Cognitive Flexibility Theory,hypertext learning environment can splendidly achieve Random Access Instruction, whichcan help students to improve their reading abilities. So compared with traditional printed text,hyperlinks in hypertext reading have a positive effect on improving EFL learners’ Englishreading comprehension. Compare linking new words with linking cultural backgroundknowledge; linking cultural background knowledge plays a more important role in improvingEnglish majors’ reading comprehensions.
