1.2   Lawrence and His Works 
As  a  modern  novelist,  David  Herbert  Lawrence  is  one  of  a  rare  kind  who  has  been cruelly insulted by the world and at the same time, wins some extreme worship of the youth elite intelligentsia. Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885 and passed away in 1930. He completed a number  of  literary  works  in  his  short  life,  including  novels,  poems,  dramas,  essays,  travel notes  and  letters.  Even  though  his  works  received  some  fierce  attacks  and  criticisms  for including so much erotic elements, his works seek to explore the depth of the human soul and successfully adopted some moving artistic descriptions. Therefore, he has won great attention and respect of the world literature from his time till now. Lawrence’s hometown was Nottinghamshire in Britain. His works The Rainbow, Women in Love, Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterley’s Lover were all based on the background of the  urban  and  rural  area  in  Nottingham,  which  was  experiencing  severe  destruction  of  the beautiful tranquil natural environment by the accelerated industrialization at the time he lived. Arthur  Lawrence,  his  father,  was  a  coal  miner,  who  had  received  very  little  education  and drank  a  lot.  While  Lydia  Beards,  his  mother,  was  a  well-educated  lady  who  was  born  in  a middle-class  family.  Normally,  combinations  of  people  from  different  classes  and backgrounds never end well. Lawrence’s childhood was almost buried in his parents’ quarrels and fights. On the other hand, his health has been poor since he was born and grew up in a considerable  poverty.  All  of  these  exerted  profound  impacts  on  Lawrence’s  thoughts, personalities and later creation.

2   R. W. Connell’s Theories on Masculinities 

As  a  core  concept  of  male  study,  masculinity  research  would  change  the  current imbalance  academic  situation  in  gender  research  area.  Further  exploration  of  this  area  will have a positive overall impact on the development of gender studies.  This chapter will map out relevant theories on Masculinities that will support the study and analysis in the body part of this paper. First Masculinity Theories before R. W. Connell including Terman and Miles’ bipolar opposite theory, androgyny of Bem and David Gilmore’s gender  and  biological determinism  will  be  introduced.  Then  R.  W.  Connell’s  theories  on masculinities which are the main theories this thesis based on will be discussed in detail.
