4   The Return of Masculinities in Lawrence’s Novels 

In  this  chapter,  the  author  is  going  to  re-sort  the  changes  of  masculinities  of  male characters  and  how  their  masculinities  return  through  all  their  attempts  and  efforts  in Lawrence’s  representative  novels  Sons  and  Lovers ， Women  in  Love  and Lady Chatterley's Lover,  analyze  the  reasons  why  masculinities  of  male  characters  in Lawrence’s novels changed from the beginning to the last period of his creation and how the ideal masculinity has been eventually achieved.   

4.1   Return of Masculinities  
Masculinities of male characters in Lawrence’s representative novels have undergone a series of changes. At the very beginning, masculinities were weakened and even marginalized, but some men have already got the awareness of the necessity of masculinities return and the will to recover them. To the middle stage, men carried out their own attempts and efforts to strive  to  recover  their  masculinities  so  that  they  might  get  a  chance  to  reestablish  their dominant position. Some of them failed in the trying process while others succeeded. To the last  period,  masculinities  returned  successfully.  This  is  a  long  and  complicated  exploration. But men achieved their comprehensive promotion at last.
