2.1 Masculinities Theories before R. W. Connell
Masculinity is a set of qualities, characteristics or roles generally considered typical of, or appropriate to, a boy or man. Academic study of masculinity underwent a massive expansion of interest in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with courses in the United States dealing with masculinity rising from 30 to over 300. This has led to the investigation of the intersection of masculinity with other axes of social discrimination and also to the use of concepts from other fields- such as feminism’s model of the social construct of gender. Connell criticizes Gilmore’s masculinity theories that have a very strong gender role color. Connell argues that masculinity is not an independent entity or characteristic that a man or a boy is born with. It is actually constructed in social context through practice in accordance with some specific social order. To Connell, there are no obvious distinctions between man and woman in terms of intelligence, character and other personal characteristics. Even though there are some differences in some aspects, they are smaller than the differences within the same sex and far less than the difference in social status between men and women.
