1.2 The purpose and significance of the study
Nowadays, teachers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of assessment, and they try their best to combine the traditional summative assessment to Formative Assessment to improve students’ reading ability. In recent years, senior high school education in our country has transferred from exam-oriented education to quality-oriented education. The core of quality-oriented education pays more attention on the development in an all-around way. For the sake of quality-oriented education, the function of educational assessment should have a major change. Assessment cannot just be regarded as a way to inspect the results of study, but also should keep an eye on the process of students’ learning. Teachers should also care about the emotion, attitude, and value that shows up during the process. It is good for the formation of active attitude and correct value. Assessment is not only the way to select talents, but also the way to encourage students and concern more about the progress of students. So, Formative Assessment has been given more attention to enhance the competence of learner autonomy, and helps students become more confident in learning English reading.

Chapter Two Literature review
The theoretical framework of the thesis is presented in chapter two, and this chapter has four parts. The first part introduces Formative Assessment in detail including definition, features, tools, and comparison of Formative Assessment and summative assessment. The second part lists the theoretical foundations of Formative Assessment. The third section is the related studies on Formative Assessment abroad and at home, and the related studies on Formative Assessment in English reading. The last part is the summary.
2.1 Introduction of Formative Assessment
At the beginning of the study, it is necessary to learn about the basic introduction of Formative Assessment.
