4. Results and Discussion 

Focusing  on  the  research  questions  listed  in  Chapter  3,  this  chapter  presents  the description  and  assessment  of  the  sample  analysis  and  group  interview.  Also,  the  researcher made a conclusion from the data analysis. 

4.1 Results and Discussion of the Writing Sample Analysis 

According  to  negative  transfer  theory,  the  error  analysis  procedures  of  Corder  (1971), and the error classifications of Carl James (2001), the researcher made an error analysis of the samples  in  this  study.  Most  of  the  learners’  language  errors  occur  in  three  levels:  substance, text  and  discourse.  Due  to  the  high  school  students’  written  expressions  are  in  the  form  of fixed  and  with  strong  controlling.  What’s  more,  both  of  the  two  composition  titles  are semi-open  writing,  so  that  textual  errors  accounted  for  a  smaller  proportion.  The  students’ errors in the discourse are not as prominent as the lexical and grammar errors. Therefore, this study will not involve discourse errors. In  this  study,  the  substance  errors  of  the  corpus  are  mainly  related  to  spelling  errors, punctuation and capitalization.
