I. Background
Nowadays functional grammar has been regarded as one of the most influential theories to conduct discourse analysis. This grammar is a part of Systemic-Functional grammar which is developed by M. A. K. Halliday. Functional grammar aims to reveal that language is a means of social interaction. Halliday sees this function as particularly relevant to the analysis of text: one that would make possible to say sensible and useful things about any text, said or written.
President Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, as an important variety of political discourse with worldwide influence and long-lasting significance, has become the classic masterpiece in the American history of literature. In China, most scholars carried out studies on presidential Inaugural Address, mainly from such dimensions as stylistics and rhetoric. Few of them have touched upon the interaction between the speaker and hearer. Therefore, there is still much research space left to make an analysis of Kennedy’s Inaugural Address from the perspective of interpersonal function.
II. Research Questions and Its Significance
By the analysis of interpersonal function in Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, the dissertation aims at finding an answer to the question of how a president influence the public’s attitude through relative objective speeches and by what devices can the interpersonal function be realized in Inaugural Address.
The study has both theoretical and practical significance. Theoretically, it can enrich and further the theory of interpersonal function. By using the theory to analyze the specific speech enhance readers’ understanding of interpersonal function in speech. Practically, it can provide a new angle to the study of Kennedy’s speech. Moreover this analysis may improve readers’ appreciation on the speech and public speaking skills. It’s also helpful to speech teaching and learning.
Ⅲ. Literature Review
Language is used to interact with each other, to establish and maintain relations, https://www.51lunwen.org/kaitibaogao/ to influence other behaviors, to express our own point of view, and to change other viewpoints. Interpersonal function represents the use of language to express social and personal relations. It embodies the relationship between the speaker/writer and the listener/reader and confined by the context where the language is used. The speaker/writer uses language as the way of his influence into the speech event: “the expression of his comment, his attitudes and evaluations, and also the relationship that he sets up between himself and the listener, in particular the communication role that he adopts of questioning, informing, getting, persuading and the like”.(Halliday, 1978)
Interpersonal function of language has been studies by many linguists since a long time ago, even though it was not termed as such. Bakhtin (1992) believes that the meaning does not reside in the word or in the soul of the speaker or the listener. It is the effect of interaction between the speaker and listener via a particular sound complex. Eggins (1997) deems interpersonal function as the function about roles and relationship, which is reflected by status, intimacy, contact and sharedness between interactants.
