摘要:As the role of Science and Technology becomes more and more important, ESTbegins to get attention of linguists from different perspectives. It is widelyacknowledged that characterized by its high complexity and abstraction, EST is oftenconsidered to be an obstacle for students in the study of English.

After systematical review on their work, wefound that most of the previous studies on nominalizations in EST just discuss thefunctions of nominalizations and there are only a few scientific discourses are beingexplored. They are lack of the empirical support.As for the application of nominalization in EST discourse to teaching, there islittle discussion. We hold that the analysis of nominalization phenomenon in ESTdiscourses may help students understand the role of nominalization in a better way.And the further study on nominalization and the understanding of its cause andstructure could provide certain theoretical basis for English-Chinese translation. InEnglish teaching, if teachers could explain nominalization appropriately it would bedefinitely helpful to students to deal with the interference of negative transfer causedby mother tongue and understand the reading material correctly. In addition, theanalysis of nominalization could also help students to cultivate their habit of thinkingin English, thus helping them to reduce disturbance of mother tongue when doing theoutput and produce standard English expression, and this would be beneficial topromote the quality of teaching.In the light of this, we can say that, the application of nominalization of ESTdiscourse in college English teaching is feasible to some extant. If students have thechance to learn something about nominalization, they could understand EST discoursebetter, thus leading to the improvement of the effectiveness of EST discourseteaching.


Chapter Two Literature Review


This study is to examine whether it is feasible to apply nominalization of ESTdiscourse in College English Teaching. In this chapter, we present the literaturereview from two aspects: the studies of English teaching and the studies ofnominalization.


2.1 An Overview of the Studies on English Teaching


2.1.1 Studies Abroad
In western countries, especially in English speaking countries, linguists haveadopted different teaching approaches in different periods to improve theeffectiveness of language teaching, basing on different understanding towardslanguage. That means there has been a long way for the improvement of teachingtheory. However, no matter how tough the way is, linguists would try their best toconstruct some more reasonable and scientific ways to promote the language teaching.


2.1.1.1 Grammar-Translation Method
No matter in the past or nowadays, most of nations are bilingualism ormultilingualism. For this perspective, it is fair to say that foreign language teachingand learning has always been an important practical concern throughout history.Though English is the most popular foreign language in the world, five hundredsyears ago it was Latin that enjoyed such popularity, for Latin dominated the field ofeducation, commerce, religion and government in the western countries at that time.In the 16 century, however, French, Italian, and English gained in importance as aresult of political changes in Europe, and Latin gradually became displaced as alanguage of spoken and written communication.
