e most elementary ways of knowing the world, which comes naturally to theyoung children and children’s language has been regared as richness ofmetaphor, reflecting their primitive but fundamental human way of perceivingthe world. When the similarity of things which are usually seen as beingdifferent from each other is noted, an act of metaphoric perception will occur;therefore we should pay more attention to the study of children’s cognitivemetaphoric understanding.Metaphor makes the abstract truth easily and specifically for children tounderstand in our daily education, so our teachers, parents and other eldersalways draw supports from metaphor. Metaphor also can awaken children’spersonal experience and help children to realize the cognition of the truths, andthen standardize their words and behaviors. The utterance that “do not listen toold words, a disadvantage is in your eyes” is a familiar example. Such kinds ofexamples can provide a new angle which guides the children to realize otherunknown areas through the concepts and conceptual systems for children tosolve the problem and obtain new knowledge and understanding. With the helpof metaphor cognitive ability, it is beneficial for preschool children tocomprehend things, to inspire their imagination and creation, to extend theirlanguage experience, and to create more favorable situation for their socialdevelopment.The value of study on pre-school children metaphor development is asfollows: Firstly, metaphor can provide a new perspective, helping children toknow new things, and bringing the unknown things into the existing knowledgesystem. Because of children’s limited experience, the original cognitiveexperience is the premise for children knowing the new things. Secondly,metaphor can create similarities which bring the new words into the existedlanguage system and strengthen the understanding of the new words forpre-school children. Thirdly, metaphor can enhance children’s languagecommunication capability. Fourthly, children’s metaphoric competence canprove benefits on realizing the rules of children’s cognitionwhich can offer greathelps for children education, and can also cultivate children’s cognitive thinkingand so on.


  0.3 Outline of the thesis论文的结构
  According to the corpus of the spontaneous utterances of two mandarin andtwo English-speaking children, the research focuses on the production ofchildren’s metaphoric language, analyses the characteristics of children’smetaphoric competence from the perspective of cognition and probes into thefactors which affect the acquisition of children’s metaphoric language, andmaximize children’s cognitive metaphor.This thesis is composed of four chapters apart from the introduction andconclusion. The introduction is about the purpose and significance of theresearch.Chapter One is the literature review, which reviews the definition ofmetaphor and metaphoric competence and some previous significant studiesconcerning children’s metaphoric competence in China and abroad to provide areference for the present study.Chapter Two gives a description on the development of children’smetaphoric competence based on our longitudinal study of mandarin data fromtwo subjects named ZHZ and MHR, which focuses on the study of datacollection and processing, research results and reasons etc.Chapter Three discusses the development of English-speaking children’smetaphoric competence by adopting 2 subjects named ADA and SAR.
