Using vagueness, people can get some positivefunctions or negative functions in their conversations.This thesis focuses on analysing vagueness in Desperate Housewives from theangle of pragmatics. In Desperate Housewives^ the vagueness mainly has twopragmatics functions: the positive function and the negative fiinction. The positivefunction includes providing the adequate amount of information, being euphemistic,being polite and lessening face-threatening effects. The negative function is to makeboth the speaker and the hearer fail to continue their communication. In DesperateHousewives, the speaker would like to use quantifying expressions when he /shewants to provide the hearer with the adequate amount of information, such as some, alittle.
