ore in their studies than those are mostlyrelay on teachers. Learners who can learn something from their own experiences and havetheir own learning system will be seen as successful one. So, when they get the learning skillsthat can make them learn by themselves they will get much knowledge in the changing world. In modern society, the main purpose of Education is to make students join in the social andpolitical life. In order to keep up with the development of the society and the changeableinternational basis, students must learn the autonomous ability. Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Learner Autonomy
2.1.1 Definition of Learner Autonomy
The phrase ¡®learner autonomy¡¯ can date back to Holec in 1981, as he used the phrase inhis report, which is important material about autonomy in language learning. According toHolec (1981: 3) ¡°Autonomy is the ability to take charge of one¡¯s own learning is to have, andto hold, the responsibility for all the decisions concerning all aspects of this learning.¡± Fromwhat Holec say above, we can understand that he emphasizes two vital aspects and that hemeans what autonomous learners can do instead of how they should do. Holec¡¯s influencewas so strong that his definition of learner autonomy has been universally accepted byeveryone in this field. Although some researchers and educators all agree with Holec¡¯s idea ofautonomous learning they still have their own understanding about it. Some see it as anindividual autonomy, while others may think it as a social concept.According to Little (1991: 4) ¡°Autonomous learning is a kind of ability ¨C for flexiblethought, self reflection, quick decision making and independent learning.¡± In his statement, learners¡¯ ability plays a very important part in learning process. In a way, he develop formerresearcher¡¯s theory through enforce the importance of cognitive ability in learner autonomy.
Benson (2003: 47) defines autonomy as ¡°the capacity to take control of one¡¯s ownlearning¡±. In his definition, Benson shows us the ¡®control of learning¡¯ more open than otherswho mostly pay attention to the charge and responsibility. Benson believes that there isseveral aspects concern with learners¡¯ autonomous learning in language. Such as£¬technical, psychological, and political aspect. They emphasize different points in language learning, such as, learner¡¯s attitude and cognitive ability, also the metacognitive and social influence. Also other researchers just like Dickinson has his understanding about learner autonomy, whoexplain the concept as learners should take full responsibility for their own studying and thedecision making. He put learner¡¯s attitude, learning condition and responsibility into a sameposition.
